Excellent post!
as long as we don't delude ourselves into thinking it's a matter of party affiliation. The federal gov't is a grasping, nefarious entity that only wants more power. If it can get the people to cede more power, it will do so...
Us boys in the South know 'bout it.
One of the truly disheartening things about so many of the votes taken on the MCA, the Patriot Act, and the like is that the Congressmen voted along party lines as if belief in habeas corpus, warrants, due process, torture and the like were actually party issues. Up until very recently, the Republicans have been supporting the administration's arrogation of power to the President in the name of party loyalty or loyalty to the President.

This is both acting as if rather than a nation based on the rule of law, the US is a country ruled by men or cliques, and foolish from a practical stand point, since any powers granted to the President when a Republican is in office will still be there the next time there is a Democrat in office.

It would appear that now that it is clear that the President commands very little support, respect or power to deliver votes, Republicans are once again free to vote their consciences, and support the Constitution.

In the next Presidential election, it will likely be important to vote so as to insure tha there is no continuity from the administration that has pulled tricks like the Attorney general's "No express gran" stunt, and that that will make the wise thing voting for the Democratic party, but once they have the White House, we could readily find ourselves having to vote them out and keep kicking out authoritarian administrations until someone gets the message that "of, by and for the people" is both what the country is about and what we, the people, want.
